European Teachers Professional Development for Science Teaching in a Web-based Environment

Bradford College has been involved with a consortium of Seven European Universities to produce a range of web-based training materials. The project has been funded through Comenius funding and completes in September 2009.

The main focus of the project is the professional development of teachers teaching science subjects at the primary and junior secondary level (grades 1-9). It is guided by the educational policy of the EC, namely the Lisbon Objectives in Education and Training (2000) and their endorsement (2002), which attempts to make education and training systems in Europe a quality reference by 2010.

That project produced a set of materials for science teacher professional development, with interconnected levels, namely:

  • Level I, aiming to identify a teacher’s professional need and to present an overall view of the professional development opportunities within the programme;
  • Level II, provides a set of individual modules, all rooted in guidelines provided by science education research and providing professional enhancement;
  • Level III, investigative projects, conducted by teacher in their own classrooms, using an action-research methodology and working in a pan-European field in conjunction with other teachers. The new institution provides a wider dimension, involving an additional language and system, while the NGO (ICASE) adds a teacher voice both to the development of the web-based system (ICASE itself) and the needs of science teachers (through its member national organisations).
